The Floral Grind Coffeehouse HISTORY 5·FACTS Mann's Lick natural salt repository drew hundreds of workers in the 1700s. The area just to the south of the repository was present-day Fairdale and served as a residential neighborhood for the workers. As the community grew, it was chartered as Newtown in 1794. By 1830, competing salt licks and the arrival of steamboats and cheaper goods affected business at Mann's Lick and reduced the population of Newtown. In 1910, residents changed the name to Fairdale. Okolona began as a farming community, but its proximity to the Outer Loop and Preston Highway — and GE's Appliance Park — helped it develop economically. For a time in the late 19th century, Fairdale was called the Woods Precinct because it was near the "Wet Woods," a forest known to provide wood for charcoal but also safe haven for criminals. South Park Country Club (915 S. Park Road) dates back to an 1854 fshing and boating club. Louisville annexed Fairdale in 2003. Known in the day as a buffalo trail, Manslick Road delivered travelers to and from, you guessed it, Mann's Lick. Jude Deveraux, a best-selling romance novelist, was born in Fairdale in 1947.
