bit the Pete Schroeder 21Qs 21 questions Pete Schroeder, 45, lacrosse coach for both the Kentucky Stickhorses (of the North American Lacrosse League) and Trinity High School, lives in J-town. The Stickhorses wrap their season March 16, at Freedom Hall, against the Rhode Island Kingsh. VE WELO That dish of red-and-white peppermints, the one on the hostess stand? The worst. We had this epiphany at AP Crafters in Westport Village. Instead of mints or God help us toothpicks, Crafters has gummy bears. Thoughtful, original. Judy Palombino, the assistant manager and wife of owner Tony (see p.100), says that each week the restaurant goes through three cases, 12 tubs per. People ask if they can take a picture with our big bowl of gummies, she says. Theyre just a feelgood kind of thing, for old and young people. I think we would have a riot if we got rid of the gummies. (Wed certainly have our pitchfork ready. Hmm, how many gummies would mt on a pitchfork prong?) When asked where the gummy bears come from, she acts as if somebody is tricking her into spilling a secret. Wait, youre with Louisville Magazine? Your perfect meal? Breakfast with my wife. Earliest childhood memory? Living in an apartment with my parents in New Jersey and playing with my brother and the other kids in our complex and the neighboring complexes. What songs been stuck in your head lately? The beginning of Born on the Bayou, by Creedence. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? A policeman. Cool uniforms. The weirdest place somebody has recognized you in public? When I was in the army and stationed in Korea, I ran into one of my high school classmates one night. Favorite bourbon drink? On the rocks, sometimes with a splash of water. All-time favorite Kentucky Derby winner? Smarty Jones. I attended that Derby with some good friends from Philly, and we bet on Smarty Jones because he was a Pennsylvania horse. Rained like crazy in the Inmeld. Memorable weekend. If Louisville had to be known for something other than the Derby, what should it be? Nice people. Sounds hokey, but Im serious. Best book youve read over the past year? I recently mnished grad school and went back and read Walden by Thoreau. Its kind of a contra-consumerism experiment. Reading it again encouraged me to re-evaluate whats necessary versus what the modern expectations are for us. Productivity during March Madness Cant-miss TV show? I DVR lacrosse whenever its on. MTV doesnt have any new episodes of Rob and Big, which was my last regular go-to. Your drink? Cold beer is a good start. Life of Pie Whos doing big things in Louisville and is ying under the radar? Other than the Kentucky Stickhorses (ha!), it really is the lacrosse community as a whole, from the third- and fourth-graders up to Bellarmine and the pros. Lacrosse is growing like crazy here, but the TV and print media arent used to covering it; therefore, a lot of you just heard about it here mrst. What tattoos do you have? A shamrock and the numbers of the four years 2004 to 2007 weve won the lacrosse state title at Trinity. Best Louisville bar? Going to go with the BBC in St. Matthews. Favorite possession? My wife would vote for my wedding ring as my favorite possession. Actual work Watching basketball during a six-hour lunch, on a smartphone at your desk. 14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 3.13 All-time favorite Louisville restaurant? My wife and I like Del Friscos. Red meat and red wine for the win. All-time favorite Louisville athlete? Going to split this vote between Johnny Unitas and Muhammad Ali. in a CITY sentence. Fleur-de-lis: Had enough or cant get enough? My sister-in-law gave me a neur-de-lis tie for Christmas, and I love it! Benedictine? Beer cheese > Benedictine. Fill in the blank: _________________s Louisville should be the next banner on the side of a building. Jennifer Lawrence. Whats something nobody knows about you? I had a speaking part in Guys and Dolls in high school. Its true: Bills Pawn and Jewelry on Dixie Highway wont accept goldsh as currency.
