polemicist whose main beef is that American music has been too shackled to all things European and has failed to fnd a distinct voice of its own. Te frst half of theshow centers on three of Aaron Coplands most popular works: Rodeo, Billy the Kid and El Salon Mexico.Te Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas is only remembered outside his native country for his flm scores, especially for Redes, which will be shown onscreen in part two as the orchestra plays the score. Long days journey into light Tis is a case where a humble hack thinks of a neat headline and has to write a piece to employ it. It is also a sneaky way of again mentioning one 2013 event that justifes all of the huf and puf I can give it. Wagners Parsifal, his fnal opera, is either the most sublime statement on human spirituality or a piece of egregious humbug. Or possibly both. But any performance is a life-changing event, like frst visiting Rome or entering Hagia Sophia or looking into the Grand Canyon. Te story of the holy fool made wise by compassion has some Christian props (the Spear, the Holy Grail) but goes deeper than any one belief set. Infused with Eastern philosophy and Buddhist beliefs, it transports the listener into a sort of musical nirvana like no other work in the opera repertoire. On Saturday, March 2, at noon, a live HD relay from the Metropolitan Opera will screen at Tinseltown, Stonybrook and New Albanys Great Escape. Te fact that the title role is taken by Jonas Kaufmann, the greatest tenor of this age, is a plus. Te running time is nearly six hours. Your call. www.kdf.org Final thought We must salute truth in advertising on the rare occasions we fnd it, so imagine my joy a few weeks back upon seeing an ad in USA Weekend, the slender magazine that accompanies the Sunday Courier-Journal. Te headline was alluring: A hose small enough to ft in my pocket and grow to full length. Bullet points: expands to more than double its size, fts in one hand, easy to use, hangs and stores easily. Reading on, the copywriter concluded by telling me the hose is strong enough for any tough job. I discussed it with my wife, and we agreed it would make a handy addition to our household. We plan to order two one for the garden. 3.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 119
