11 am on Tune Into earthen slope that would rise to the bridge, but soil testing proved the design unreliable. Tat brought everything back into the hands of Karem, WDC vice president Mike Kimmel, and project manager Clinton Deckard, president of Construction Solutions. Tey decided on a design that was not only environmentally feasible but innovative. A box girder system, using a series of seven weathering steel posts, raises an ellipse into the sky, which gives the illusion that the circular ramp connecting ground to bridge is foating on air. Te choice of naturally weathering steel (called Cor-Ten steel) matches the bridge's antique patina, and provides natural protection against the elements. From the ground the posts become picture frames for some outstanding vistas. Te deck, some 55 feet in the air, ofers views of downtown you couldn't see before unless you were on a boat … or were a bird. LED towers on the ramp emulate the lighting on the Great Lawn. Te system has the capability of almost unlimited color combinations — the better to say "Merry Christmas," "Fight Breast Cancer" or "Go Cards." Once on the bridge, you may feel as if you've entered an outdoor cathedral. Look up: Te original steelwork towers seem like antique lace. Playful shapes draw the eye back down; octagons and triangles harmonize in a symphony of lines and space. Tousands of original rivets soften the steel, also adding visual interest. And the bridge's six independent sections allow the structure to breathe. "Te geometric proportions created by the beams and trusses are as intricate as hand-stitched lace," Kimmel says. Te new cast concrete deck is wide enough for walkers and cyclists, although custom-made benches beckon you to sit down and enjoy the view. At night, hanging pendant lights create a sense of forward movement, like a tree-lined boulevard. Soft side lighting should make visitors feel safe, a concern because the bridge will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Te bridge is a mix of old and new, artistic and practical, the reverent and the playful. It is public design at its best — a steel-and-concrete statement that there really is possibility here, even for an obsolete railroad crossing.
