OPPOSITE PAGE: George Allard, 64, Louisville How is this project different from others you've worked on? "This is a project I actually wanted to be on when I was working on the Yum! Center across the street." Why? "Just the historic value of it. This is preserving history as well as history in the making." Ever seen a restoration project like this before? "Uh, no." RIGHT (clockwise): Bryan Hungwell, 50, Louisville What do you like about construction? "I just like building stuff. And being outside." What do you make of this project? "I don't understand what they're trying to do, really. But I've never done anything historical like this." Rusty Prather, 61, Louisville Is all of this work worth it? "I don't know if I'm allowed to give that opinion. But there's been so much deterioration over the years." James Lashley, 52, Grayson County What do you make of this project? "It's work. Nowadays, the way things are, you're lucky to mnd work in construction. This job here saved us." Would you have torn all the buildings down? "I don't know what to think, to tell you the truth. I never thought any of this was possible. It'll be nice to drive up and see it when it's all done, knowing I was part of it." Jeremiah "Frog" Williams, 35, Leitchmeld, Ky. How'd you get your nickname? "My old boss called me Frog. Jeremiah ain't too easy to yell. Once my old boss said it, everybody said it." What do you like about construction? "Money, baby. Money." How does this compare with other jobs you've done? "There's no comparison. The extensive amount of work you have to do before you can even do the other things. Gotta make it stable before you can tear it down. The curiosity to me is what they're gonna put back." Is it dangerous? "Safer now. No more rotted noors to fall through." 2.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4 1
